Volunteers

This would involve helping families get excited about science by showing them some fun science activities they can do at Discovery, sneaking into some science and planetarium shows, some free icy poles, and endless tea and coffee! 

If you have been a volunteer with us in the past we would love to have you back!

Work Experience

Develop your skills in a supportive environment, and gain valuable experience to build your resume. Volunteering or completing placement at Discovery has been a great foot in the door to casual employment within the organisation.

Teaching Experience

La Trobe University Bendigo is the Discovery Science and Technology Centre education partner, and you can complete your Community Service Learning component of EDU1DLC during first year education here at Discovery. We also host second year Preservice Teachers.

Student Placement

If you’re a La Trobe University Bendigo student you may be able to gain course credit in the Workplace Integrated Learning Scheme (WILS) at Discovery. We can help you develop skills in science communication, marketing, workplace dynamics and team work.  Talk to your course coordinator to learn about credit opportunities.

Volunteer Position Available:
Girls in STEM Program Assistant

Location: Bendigo
Time Commitment: 3-4 hours per week starting February, 2024

Overview:

The Girls in STEM Program at Discovery Science and Technology Centre is dedicated to inspiring and
empowering young girls to explore and excel in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and
Mathematics (STEM). We are seeking an enthusiastic and committed individual to join our team as
Girls in STEM Program Volunteer. This volunteer position provides an excellent opportunity to
contribute to the advancement of STEM education for girls, supporting the mission of Discovery
Science and Technology Centre to break down barriers to STEM education.

Qualifications:

– Passion for promoting STEM education and encouraging girls’ interest in STEM fields.
– Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
– Ability to work collaboratively in a team setting.
– Basic organizational and administrative skills.
– Reliable and committed to the weekly time commitment.

Training and Support:

You will receive training on program content, effective communication strategies, and workshop
facilitation techniques. Ongoing support will be provided by the General Manager and Science
Communicator.

Responsibilities:

1. Correspondence with Parents and Schools:
– Assist in communicating program details, schedules, and updates to parents and schools.
– Respond to inquiries and provide information about the Girls in STEM program.

2. STEM Kit Packing:
– Work closely with the program team to prepare and pack STEM kits for workshops.
– Ensure that all necessary materials and resources are organized and ready for distribution.

3. Workshop Assistance:
– Collaborate with the science communicator and program coordinators to facilitate
engaging STEM workshops for girls.
– Provide support during hands-on activities and experiments, ensuring a positive and
inclusive learning environment.

4. Data Entry and Tracking:
– Assist in maintaining participant records, attendance, and feedback.
– Contribute to the documentation of workshop outcomes and success stories.
