About the Discovery Centre
At Discovery, we aim to inspire and nurture scientific curiosity through engaging STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) experiences for all. We house over 100 interactive exhibits, including:
· The Bendigo Planetarium
· Australia’s first vertical slide
· Kaleidoscope, a special zone for under-six-year-olds
· The Lab, a space for messy experiments and memorable birthday celebrations
Our programs include planetarium shows, science workshops, school incursions, birthday parties, and sleepovers. We strive to make science accessible, fun, and interactive for all visitors.
About Our Organisation
The Discovery Science & Technology Centre, Australia’s first regional science centre, has been inspiring minds since 1995. Operated by the not-for-profit Bendigo Science and Technology Museum Inc., the Centre welcomes around 30,000 visitors annually, including over 200 school groups. A dedicated team of full-time, casual, and volunteer staff ensures our programs and exhibits run smoothly.
Nature of the Role
As a Discovery Science Explainer, you will be the face of our science communication efforts; delivering hands-on workshops, shows, and activities that spark curiosity and excitement in learners of all ages. This is a dynamic, public-facing role ideal for someone who is energetic, adaptable, and passionate about making science fun and accessible.
Key aspects of the role include:
· Delivering hands-on STEM workshops and presentations that captivate diverse audiences.
· Working in dynamic, high-energy environments that may require physical activity, such as climbing stairs for our Vertical Slide exhibit.
· Driving of up to 150 km per day to regional locations such as schools and libraries (travel allowance provided for using your own vehicle).
Key Responsibilities and Duties
· Deliver engaging science workshops and shows at the Centre and in regional schools and libraries.
· Travel confidently to various locations to represent Discovery at community events.
· Host birthday parties and sleepovers, creating memorable experiences for guests.
· Provide excellent customer service, ensuring a welcoming and inclusive environment.
· Participate in daily Centre operations, including assisting with the Vertical Slide, planetarium sessions, and exhibit maintenance.
· Handle retail transactions, including admissions and merchandise sales.
· Perform other duties as requested within competency and training.
Key Selection Criteria
Essential:
1. Strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills, with the confidence to engage groups of children and adults.
2. Passion for science communication and education.
3. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
4. Ability to take initiative and work independently when required.
5. Flexibility and adaptability in various work settings.
6. Current Working with Children Check and a valid driver's license (required at the time of appointment).
Desirable:
1. Experience in an educational or group presentation setting.
2. Retail or customer service experience.
Pay and Conditions[JC1]
· This role is covered under the Amusement, Events, and Recreation Award 2024.
· Casual rates apply, including applicable loadings and penalty rates.
· Shifts are primarily scheduled during:
o School holidays
o Large school bookings
o Weekend birthday parties
o Occasional evening or overnight events (e.g., sleepovers)
Uniform
Staff are provided with a uniform shirt. A Uniform Policy applies, and adherence is required.
